Kettlebell Push Press
A leg-assisted overhead press with the kettlebell in the rack, training the shoulders and triceps with athletic power.
How to do it
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and clean the kettlebell into the rack position at your shoulder.
- Brace your core and dip slightly at the knees and hips, keeping your torso vertical.
- Drive explosively through your heels, extending your legs and launching the kettlebell upward.
- Press the kettlebell to a full overhead lockout, biceps by your ear and wrist stacked over your elbow.
- Lower the kettlebell back to the rack under control, absorbing it with a soft bend in the knees.
- Reset your stance and tension, then dip and drive again for the next rep.
Key technique cue
Short dip, drive with the legs first, then press; don't squat deep.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Turning the dip into a deep squat instead of a short, fast dip and drive.
- ✕ Pressing with the arm before the leg drive transfers, which kills the power assist.
- ✕ Bending the wrist back at lockout, which loads the joint instead of the shoulder.
- ✕ Leaning back through the lower back to finish the press instead of pressing straight overhead.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds more overhead pressing strength than a strict press allows.
- ✓ Trains explosive power transfer from legs to arms that carries over to sport.
- ✓ Builds shoulder and triceps size under sustained kettlebell load.

About the exercise
The Kettlebell Push Press is an overhead press that uses a short dip and leg drive to launch the kettlebell upward. The leg drive lets you handle heavier weights than a strict press, while the lockout and lowering phases still load the shoulders and triceps. The bell sits in the rack position against the forearm, which keeps the wrist neutral and the elbow tucked. It's a staple kettlebell exercise and a workhorse for HIIT, conditioning, and CrossFit-style training. It fits kettlebell push days, athletic conditioning, and intermediate lifters where the key lesson is timing the dip and drive.
