Barbell Thruster
A front squat that flows into an overhead press in one movement — the conditioning workhorse that taxes the legs, shoulders, and lungs at once.
How to do it
- Set the bar in the front rack position on the front of your shoulders with your elbows high.
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, brace your core, and keep your chest up throughout.
- Drop into a full front squat, sending your hips back and keeping your knees over your toes.
- Drive hard out of the bottom and use that leg drive to launch the bar off your shoulders.
- Press the bar overhead in one smooth motion, finishing with straight arms and your biceps by your ears.
- Lower the bar back to the front rack under control and reset for the next rep without pausing.
Key technique cue
Press as you drive out of the squat, legs give the momentum; elbows high, full depth.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Pressing the bar with the arms alone instead of using leg drive out of the squat to launch the press.
- ✕ Dropping the elbows in the front rack, which collapses the chest and dumps the bar forward.
- ✕ Cutting squat depth to save energy, which turns it into a half-rep push press.
- ✕ Catching the bar too hard on the shoulders on the way down, which beats up the front delts over high volume.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds full-body strength and conditioning in a single compound movement.
- ✓ Trains the transfer of leg drive into an overhead press for athletic power carryover.
- ✓ Spikes the heart rate fast, making it a high-return choice for conditioning work.
