Cable Side Bend

Standing cable side bend that loads the obliques against constant tension for a stronger, more defined waist.

How to do it

  1. Set the pulley to the low position and attach a single handle, then stand side-on to the cable stack.
  2. Take the handle in the hand closest to the stack and stand tall with feet hip-width apart.
  3. Place your free hand on your hip and let the cable pull you slightly toward the stack at the start.
  4. Bend sideways away from the stack, contracting the obliques on the far side of your body.
  5. Pause at the end of the bend with a hard oblique squeeze, keeping your hips level and chest up.
  6. Slowly return to the start over 2 seconds, then repeat for 12–15 reps before switching sides.

Key technique cue

Bend straight sideways, not forward or back; don't help with the arm.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning forward or back instead of straight to the side, which takes the obliques out of the exercise.
  • Using the arm to lift the cable, which turns it into a one-sided shrug.
  • Shifting the hips sideways, which steals load from the obliques.
  • Rushing the rep and bouncing at the bottom instead of controlling the return.

Benefits

  • Builds the obliques under constant cable tension.
  • Strengthens lateral core control for sport, rotation and stabilization.
  • Trains each side of the core independently to fix imbalances.

About the exercise

The cable side bend is a standing core exercise done from a low pulley with a single handle. Bending sideways at the waist against the cable, it loads the obliques directly with constant tension — something a bodyweight side bend can't match. Done one side at a time, it lets you train each side of the core evenly without one side taking over. It is a great fit for core days, ab programs and athletic training where lateral core strength supports rotation and stabilization. It also helps beginners learn to load the obliques in isolation.
