Incline treadmill walk

Treadmill walking at an 8–12% incline without holding the rails: strong glute work with almost no impact.

How to do it

  1. Step onto the treadmill, start at a low speed and warm up on a small incline.
  2. Raise the incline to 8–12% and pick a speed at which the stride stays confident.
  3. Keep the torso upright or leaning slightly forward, eyes ahead.
  4. Do not hold the rails; the arms swing in rhythm with the steps.
  5. Place the whole foot down and push through the heel as the hip extends.
  6. Breathe evenly and keep your heart rate in the target zone until the time is up.

Key technique cue

Set an 8–12% incline, keep your hands off the rails, and breathe steadily.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning on the rails
  • Leaning far back, or too far forward
  • Tiny steps on the toes
  • Speed so high that the breathing breaks

Benefits

  • Strong load on the glutes and hamstrings
  • Heart rate up without impact
  • Suits long work in a heart-rate zone

About the exercise

Incline treadmill walking loads the glutes, hamstrings and calves heavily and raises the heart rate without running. It suits beginners, people in recovery and long work in a heart-rate zone.
