Treadmill walk

Brisk treadmill walking at a conversational pace, with an incline if you like.

How to do it

  1. Step onto the treadmill and start at a slow speed.
  2. Warm up for a couple of minutes, then raise the speed to a brisk walk.
  3. Keep your torso upright, eyes forward, shoulders relaxed, arms bent and swinging freely.
  4. Land on the heel softly and roll through to the toes with a natural stride.
  5. If you like, add a small incline, but do not lean on the rails.
  6. Hold a pace at which you can talk, and slow down at the end.

Key technique cue

Brisk conversational-pace walk — add an incline to increase the challenge.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning your full weight on the rails
  • Too much incline with a hunched back
  • A long stride with a hard heel strike
  • Looking at your feet with the head dropped

Benefits

  • Gives cardio with low impact
  • Works as a warm-up and for recovery

About the exercise

Treadmill walking is calm, steady cardio at a constant pace in a chosen zone. It works the legs and glutes, especially with the belt inclined, and gives almost no impact. It suits beginners, warm-ups, recovery and long sessions.
