Barbell Wrist Curl

A short-range wrist curl that isolates the forearm flexors — the classic finisher for grip strength and forearm size.

How to do it

  1. Sit on a bench and rest your forearms on your thighs so your wrists hang just past your knees.
  2. Hold the bar with an underhand grip, hands shoulder-width apart, and let it roll down to your fingertips.
  3. Curl the bar up by closing your fingers and flexing your wrists, keeping your forearms pinned to your thighs.
  4. Squeeze hard at the top with your wrists fully flexed and feel your forearms contract.
  5. Lower the bar back down under control, letting it roll to your fingertips at the bottom.
  6. Repeat for high reps, focusing on a slow tempo and full range from fingertips to the squeeze at the top.

Key technique cue

Forearms glued to the thighs; only the wrists move, down to the fingertips.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting the forearms off the thighs, which lets the biceps take over instead of isolating the forearms.
  • Going too heavy and cutting the range so the bar barely moves at the wrist.
  • Skipping the roll to the fingertips at the bottom, which removes half the forearm and grip work.
  • Rushing the tempo and bouncing reps, which removes the time under tension that builds the forearms.

Benefits

  • Builds forearm size and grip strength through direct isolation.
  • Strengthens wrist flexion for sports, lifting, and climbing.
  • Improves grip endurance for heavier pulling work and carries.

About the exercise

The Barbell Wrist Curl isolates the forearm flexors through a short, controlled wrist curl. With the forearms supported and movement only at the wrists, it takes every other muscle out of the picture and forces the forearms to do all the work. It's one of the few movements that trains grip and forearm size directly. It fits well into arm-day finishers, grip-strength accessory work and sport prep for climbing or grappling. It's short, low-fatigue and pairs well with reverse wrist curls and farmer's carries in dedicated grip blocks for a more complete arm program.
