Kettlebell Gorilla Row
An alternating two-kettlebell row from a wide stance that loads the lats and biceps under constant tension.
How to do it
- Stand over two kettlebells with feet wider than shoulder-width and toes turned slightly out.
- Hinge at the hips and grab both handles with a flat back, open chest, and arms hanging straight down.
- Brace your core and row the right kettlebell to your hip, keeping the elbow close to your ribs.
- Lower the right bell back to the floor under control, keeping the left arm long and loaded.
- Row the left kettlebell to your hip along the same tight elbow path, resisting any torso rotation.
- Keep alternating sides for the whole set, with hips square and back flat throughout.
Key technique cue
Keep the hips square: row to the hip, the other arm stays loaded.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Rotating the torso to heave the bell up instead of rowing cleanly with the back.
- ✕ Flaring the elbow wide, which shifts the load from the lats to the rear shoulders.
- ✕ Rounding the lower back at the bottom of each rep, which strains the spine under load.
- ✕ Yanking the bell off the floor with the arm instead of pulling with the lats and mid-back.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds lat and biceps thickness with a heavy two-sided load.
- ✓ Trains anti-rotation strength through the core on every rep.
- ✓ Reinforces a strong hip hinge under sustained kettlebell load.

About the exercise
The Kettlebell Gorilla Row is an alternating row from a wide stance with two kettlebells on the floor between your feet. While one bell is rowed to the hip, the other stays on the ground as a brace, which keeps the lats, mid-back, and biceps loaded for the whole set and trains anti-rotation through the trunk. It fits kettlebell pulling workouts, hybrid strength-and-conditioning blocks, and intermediate lifters for whom refining technique matters more than load.
