Kettlebell Row

A bent-over row with two kettlebells that builds the lats and biceps in the horizontal pulling pattern.

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and a kettlebell on the floor outside each foot.
  2. Hinge at the hips with a flat back and grab both handles, letting the bells hang on straight arms.
  3. Brace your core and row both kettlebells up to your lower ribs, leading with your elbows.
  4. Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top and keep your elbows tucked close to your sides.
  5. Lower the kettlebells slowly back toward the floor, resisting the descent through the full range.
  6. Repeat for the whole set without losing the hinge or swinging the torso for momentum.

Key technique cue

Hold the hinge all set, row the bells to the ribs with the elbows.

Common mistakes

  • Standing up taller as the set goes on, which turns the row into a shrug.
  • Yanking the bells up with arm strength alone instead of pulling with the back.
  • Flaring the elbows wide, which shifts the work from the lats to the rear delts.
  • Rounding the lower back at the bottom, which loads the spine instead of the back muscles.

Benefits

  • Builds lat and biceps size with a deep, unrestricted range of motion.
  • Trains the horizontal pulling pattern that balances out pressing work.
  • Strengthens the role of the lower back and core in holding a hinge under load.

About the exercise

The Kettlebell Row is a bent-over horizontal row with a kettlebell in each hand. The lifter hinges forward, lets the bells hang on straight arms, and rows them to the ribs while keeping the torso braced and parallel to the floor. The neutral grip is friendlier on the wrists than a barbell row and lets the elbows tuck closer to the sides for better lat engagement. It's a staple kettlebell exercise and an easy way to learn the rowing pattern. It fits kettlebell pull days, home workouts, and beginner-to-intermediate back building where the goal is lat and biceps size without a barbell.
