Kettlebell Swing
The signature kettlebell exercise — an explosive hip hinge that swings the bell to chest height for power and conditioning.
How to do it
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and the kettlebell on the floor about 30 cm in front of you.
- Hinge at the hips, grab the handle with both hands, and tip the kettlebell back toward you.
- Hike the kettlebell back between your legs, keeping your back flat and arms relaxed.
- Snap your hips forward explosively to drive the kettlebell up to chest height on straight arms.
- Let the bell float for a moment at the top, then let it drop and load the next hinge.
- Catch the kettlebell between your legs with a soft hinge and flow straight into the next rep.
Key technique cue
The hips throw the bell: snap them forward, arms stay loose; don't squat.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Squatting the bell up and down instead of pushing the hips back and snapping them forward.
- ✕ Lifting the bell with the arms and shoulders instead of driving with the hips.
- ✕ Rounding the lower back at the bottom, which puts the spine at risk under load.
- ✕ Overarching the lower back at the top of the swing instead of finishing with the glutes squeezed.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds explosive hip power from the glutes and hamstrings.
- ✓ Trains heart-pumping conditioning in short, heavy sets.
- ✓ Strengthens the grip, core, and lower back as a stabilizing chain.
About the exercise
The Kettlebell Swing is the most recognizable kettlebell exercise in the world. It's an explosive hip hinge in which the lifter snaps the hips forward to swing the kettlebell from between the legs to chest height, then lets gravity load the next rep. The glutes and hamstrings produce the power, the lower back stabilizes, and the grip and core hold everything together. It's a key exercise for kettlebell training, conditioning, and fat loss, and a cornerstone of beginner-to-advanced kettlebell training, HIIT circuits, and posterior-chain power blocks.
