Single-Leg Kettlebell Romanian Deadlift (Deficit)

A single-leg Romanian deadlift from a raised platform, adding range at the bottom of the hinge under load.

How to do it

  1. Set a stable platform one to three inches high and stand on it with one foot.
  2. Hold a kettlebell and shift your weight onto the standing leg.
  3. Soften the standing knee and set your shoulders back.
  4. Push the hip back and let the free leg extend behind you.
  5. Lower the kettlebell past the level of the platform, keeping the hips level.
  6. Drive the hip forward to stand, then finish the set and switch sides.

Key technique cue

Low stable platform; lower the bell while the back stays long, and keep the hips square.

Common mistakes

  • Using a platform so tall that the back rounds before the hamstring reaches its limit.
  • Letting the free hip rotate open, which turns the hinge into a rotation.
  • Standing on an unstable riser, which makes balance rather than the hamstring the limit.
  • Keeping the same load as the flat version, which is heavier through the added range.

Benefits

  • Adds hamstring range at the bottom without adding external load.
  • Trains the hamstring at long muscle length on one leg at a time.
  • Gives a progression step for users who have outgrown the flat version.

About the exercise

The deficit version stands the working foot on a low platform so the kettlebell can travel below the level of the foot. Everything else matches the standard single-leg RDL: soft standing knee, free leg extending behind, hips level, spine long, kettlebell tracking down the standing leg. The extra couple of inches load the hamstring at a longer muscle length, which is where hinge variations do most of their work. The turnaround belongs at the point where hamstring length stops the descent, and a deficit simply moves that point lower. It is the same movement with one change: added range instead of added load.
