Kettlebell Romanian Deadlift

A kettlebell hinge that loads the hamstrings, glutes, and lower back through a slow, controlled stretch.

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet hip-width apart and hold the kettlebell with both hands in front of your thighs.
  2. Pull your shoulder blades back and brace your core, locking your spine in a neutral position.
  3. Push your hips back and lower the kettlebell along the front of your legs with a slight bend in the knees.
  4. Lower the bell until you feel a deep stretch in your hamstrings, usually to about mid-shin.
  5. Drive your hips forward to stand up, keeping the kettlebell close to your body the whole way.
  6. Squeeze your glutes hard at the top and reset your tension before the next rep.

Key technique cue

Slide the bell down your legs, hips back; knees stay soft, back flat.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the hinge into a squat by bending the knees instead of pushing the hips back.
  • Rounding the lower back as the bell lowers, which loads the spine instead of the hamstrings.
  • Letting the bell drift away from the body, which pulls the lifter forward and strains the back.
  • Overarching the lower back at the top instead of standing tall with the glutes squeezed.

Benefits

  • Builds hamstring and glute strength through a deep loaded stretch.
  • Teaches the hip-hinge pattern behind every deadlift variation.
  • Strengthens the lower back's role as a stabilizer under load.

About the exercise

The Kettlebell Romanian Deadlift is a hip-hinge exercise in which the lifter lowers the kettlebell along the front of the legs by pushing the hips back rather than squatting. The slow lowering phase loads the hamstrings and glutes through a long stretch, while the lower back stabilizes the load. It's one of the cleanest ways to learn the hinge pattern with a single kettlebell. It's a beginner-friendly entry point to the deadlift family — easier to learn than the barbell Romanian deadlift and safer for the first loaded reps. It suits beginners, foundational kettlebell training, and posterior-chain work for intermediate and advanced athletes.
