Stiff-Legged Dumbbell Deadlift
A hip hinge with nearly straight knees, lowering two dumbbells along the legs to load the hamstrings and glutes.
How to do it
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of the thighs.
- Brace the abs, keep the chest up, and unlock the knees only a small amount.
- Hinge at the hips and slide the dumbbells down the front of the legs.
- Lower until you feel a hamstring stretch, without rounding the lower back.
- Drive the hips forward to stand tall and squeeze the glutes at the top.
- Reset the brace and repeat, keeping the weights close to the body.
Key technique cue
Knees only slightly soft, dumbbells close to the legs — don't round to reach the floor.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Rounding the lower back to reach the floor.
- ✕ Bending the knees enough that the lift becomes a conventional deadlift.
- ✕ Letting the dumbbells drift away from the legs.
- ✕ Jerking the weights off the bottom instead of driving the hips forward.
Benefits
- ✓ Loads the hamstrings in a stretched position with a pair of dumbbells.
- ✓ Trains the hinge without a barbell or a rack.
- ✓ Builds the posterior chain that supports squats and conventional deadlifts.

About the exercise
The stiff-legged dumbbell deadlift is a posterior-chain hinge. From standing, you push the hips back with the knees only slightly bent and lower the dumbbells along the legs until the hamstrings are stretched, then drive the hips forward to stand. Keeping the knees stiff is what makes it different from a Romanian deadlift: more hip flexion, a longer hamstring stretch, and more demand on the spinal erectors to hold a flat back. Dumbbells can travel past the feet, so the range is often longer than a barbell version.
