Outdoor run

Outdoor running at an even pace, landing softly under your centre of mass.

How to do it

  1. Start with 5–10 minutes of walking or easy jogging as a warm-up.
  2. Lean slightly forward from the ankles with relaxed shoulders.
  3. Land on the midfoot under your centre of mass, not far out in front.
  4. Use a short, quick stride with the arms bent and swinging along the body.
  5. Breathe evenly and choose a pace at which you can speak in short phrases.
  6. Run the set distance at the target pace and finish with a walk.

Key technique cue

Maintain a steady pace and relaxed breathing; land under your center of mass.

About the exercise

Outdoor running is the basic cyclic load for endurance. The legs, glutes and core work while the heart and lungs get a steady load. It suits beginners who build volume gradually and experienced runners working on distance and pace.
