Skater jumps

Side-to-side bounds from leg to leg, like a speed skater: cardio for the legs and glutes.

How to do it

  1. Stand on one leg with the knee slightly bent and the torso leaning a little forward.
  2. Push off hard to the side and bound onto the other leg.
  3. Land on the bent leg and sweep the free leg behind the standing one.
  4. Swing the arms across the body toward the side of the jump, as when skating.
  5. Land softly without letting the knee collapse inward.
  6. Keep alternating sides at an even tempo.

Key technique cue

Bound sideways from one leg to the other, sweeping the opposite leg behind you.

Common mistakes

  • Knee collapsing inward
  • Hard landing on a straight leg
  • Too short a jump
  • Losing balance and touching the floor with the free leg

Benefits

  • Builds balance and stability
  • Loads the glutes and legs
  • Raises heart rate

About the exercise

Skater jumps are lateral bounds from one leg to the other, with the free leg swept behind. They load the glutes, quads, hip abductors and cardiovascular system. They suit intervals and balance work.
