Box Jump

Explosive jump from the floor onto a box — a clean way to train lower-body power without hard landings.

How to do it

  1. Stand a comfortable distance in front of a stable box, feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Drop into a quarter squat, sitting the hips back and swinging your arms behind you.
  3. Explode upward, driving off the floor and swinging your arms forward and up.
  4. Pull your knees up under you in the air and aim to land softly on the box.
  5. Land in a soft quarter squat with both feet flat on the box and your chest up.
  6. Stand fully upright on the box, then step down one foot at a time and reset for the next rep.

Key technique cue

Land soft in a quarter squat, then step down — don't jump off.

Common mistakes

  • Jumping down off the box instead of stepping down — adds needless impact on the knees over high volume.
  • Landing stiff-legged with a flat slam instead of absorbing softly into a quarter squat.
  • Picking a box that's too high and barely clearing it, which leads to scraped shins and missed reps.
  • Too much arm swing without a leg drive — turns a power movement into an arm-powered hop.

Benefits

  • Builds explosive lower-body power for sport and athletic performance.
  • Trains reactive strength with reduced landing impact.
  • Develops glute, quad and calf power through triple extension.

About the exercise

The box jump is one of the most effective plyometric exercises in any athletic program. Exploding off the floor and landing on a stable box, it trains lower-body power and reactive strength while keeping landing impact low — the box absorbs what would otherwise be a hard landing on the floor. It builds the glutes, quads and calves through a fast, powerful triple extension. It belongs in any conditioning, athletic or hybrid program. It is especially useful for sports where vertical power transfers directly — basketball, volleyball, sprinting. Use it in HIIT workouts and explosive-strength blocks as a power movement without a barbell.
