Seated Calf Raise

A machine calf raise from a seated position that loads the soleus.

How to do it

  1. Sit in the machine and place the balls of your feet on the platform, heels free.
  2. Set your knees under the pad and release the safety.
  3. Lower your heels as far as you can to stretch the calves.
  4. Rise onto your toes as high as possible using your calves.
  5. Pause for a second at the top.
  6. Lower your heels slowly and repeat.

Key technique cue

Knees under the pad, drive the heels up through the toes, full range, no bounce.

Common mistakes

  • Jerky reps and bouncing at the bottom
  • Short range of motion
  • A weight so heavy that the calves stop doing the work
  • Dropping the heels without control

Benefits

  • Stronger calves with better endurance
  • Development of the soleus
  • Safe loading on a machine

About the exercise

With bent knees, most of the work falls on the soleus, which lies beneath the gastrocnemius. The exercise builds calf strength and endurance and suits almost everyone. Perform it slowly and through a full range of motion.
