Standing Calf Raise (Machine)

A machine calf raise with straight legs that loads the gastrocnemius.

How to do it

  1. Step into the machine with your shoulders under the pads and the balls of your feet on the platform, heels free.
  2. Straighten your legs without locking the knees hard and keep your torso upright.
  3. Lower your heels below the platform to stretch the calves.
  4. Rise onto your toes as high as you can.
  5. Pause for a second at the top.
  6. Lower slowly to a full stretch and repeat.

Key technique cue

Shoulders under the pads, rise onto the balls of the feet, pause at the top, lower below the platform.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the knees and bouncing
  • Short range of motion, especially at the bottom
  • Too heavy a weight with jerky reps
  • Arching the lower back

Benefits

  • Stronger, bigger gastrocnemius muscles
  • Safe work with heavy weight
  • Strength that carries over to running and jumping

About the exercise

With straight legs, most of the work goes to the gastrocnemius, which shapes the outer calf. A machine with shoulder pads lets you use heavy weight without loading the arms. It suits anyone building calf strength and size.
