Bodyweight Donkey Calf Raise

A bent-over calf raise that loads the gastrocnemius through a deep stretch — old-school calf work, no machine needed.

How to do it

  1. Stand with the balls of your feet on the edge of a step or low platform, heels hanging off the edge.
  2. Hinge forward at the hips and place your hands on a sturdy surface in front of you for support.
  3. Keep your back flat and your legs nearly straight, with just a slight bend in the knees.
  4. Slowly lower your heels below the platform until you feel a deep stretch in your calves.
  5. Press through the balls of your feet to rise as high onto your toes as you can.
  6. Squeeze your calves hard at the top, then lower under control over 2–3 seconds and repeat.

Key technique cue

Hinged forward with knees nearly straight — don't dip into a squat.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the knees too much, which shifts the work from the gastrocnemius to the soleus.
  • Cutting the range and skipping the deep heel stretch, where most of the growth happens.
  • Bouncing reps instead of a controlled lowering — it kills time under tension for the calves.
  • Rounding the back in the bent-over position, which loads the lower back over high volume.

Benefits

  • Builds calf size by loading the gastrocnemius in a deep stretch.
  • Works the calves through a bigger range of motion than standing variations.
  • Develops calf shape without any machine.

About the exercise

The Bodyweight Donkey Calf Raise is old-school calf work made famous by Arnold, adapted for bodyweight. By hinging at the hips with a flat back and rising onto the balls of the feet, it loads the gastrocnemius through a deep stretch that standing raises can't provide. The bent-over torso position changes the leverage and hits the calves with a different line of pull. It fits well into calf finishers in hypertrophy blocks, leg-day accessory work and physique programs. It's also useful as a no-equipment alternative when there's no calf machine — a strong addition to home and travel leg training.
