Barbell Front Rack Step Up Knee Drive
Loaded single-leg step-up with a knee drive at the top — quad strength, glute power, and balance under a front-rack bar.
How to do it
- Set the box at roughly knee height and secure the bar on the front of your shoulders with your elbows high.
- Stand close to the box, brace your core and place one foot fully on top of it.
- Drive through your whole foot on the box to stand tall, keeping your chest up and the bar steady.
- At the top, drive the knee of your trailing leg up and forward to hip height in a sprint-style motion.
- Lower that leg back down and step off the box under control, without slamming down.
- Return to the start and repeat for the prescribed reps, then switch legs.
Key technique cue
Elbows high; push through the foot on the box, not the trailing leg.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Pushing off with the back leg instead of working through the lead leg on the box.
- ✕ Dropping the elbows in the front rack, which collapses the bar onto the chest and rounds the back.
- ✕ Using a box that's too high, which forces a hip shift and takes tension off the quads.
- ✕ Stepping down hard instead of under control, which pounds the joints and breaks position.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds single-leg quad and glute strength under real load.
- ✓ Trains hip and knee drive power for sprinting and jumping.
- ✓ Reinforces balance and core bracing under a front-rack bar.

About the exercise
The front-rack barbell step-up with knee drive is a single-leg strength and power exercise. The lifter holds the bar in the front rack, steps up onto a box with one leg and drives the opposite knee up at the top of each rep. It loads the quads and glutes hard while training balance, hip drive and core stability under a front-loaded bar. It's a high-value exercise for athletic prep and hybrid training. It combines leg strength work and a sprint-style knee drive in a single movement, making it ideal for sports prep blocks, runner programs and conditioning for combat sports. It adds single-leg variety beyond standard squats.
