Barbell Step Up Knee Drive
A barbell back step-up with a knee drive at the top — single-leg quad and glute strength with an explosive hip drive built in.
How to do it
- Set up a sturdy box at about knee height and lock the bar onto your upper back.
- Stand close to the box, brace your core, and place one foot fully on top of it.
- Drive through your whole foot on the box to stand tall, keeping your chest up and the bar steady.
- At the top, drive the knee of your trailing leg up and forward to hip height in a sprinting motion.
- Lower that leg back down and step off the box under control, without slamming down.
- Return to the starting position and repeat for the prescribed reps, then switch legs.
Key technique cue
Don't fold forward under the bar; stand tall and drive through the box leg.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Pushing off the back leg instead of working through the lead leg on the box.
- ✕ Using a box that's too high, which forces a hip shift and takes tension off the quads.
- ✕ Folding the torso forward under the bar, which turns it into a heavy good morning.
- ✕ Dropping hard off the box, which pounds the joints and breaks position between reps.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds single-leg quad and glute strength under real load.
- ✓ Trains an explosive hip and knee drive for sprinting and jumping.

About the exercise
The Barbell Step Up Knee Drive is a single-leg strength and power exercise. With the bar on the upper back, the athlete steps onto a box with one leg and drives the opposite knee up to hip height at the top of every rep. It loads the quads and glutes hard while training balance, hip drive, and the same knee-drive action used in sprinting. It's a high-value single-leg exercise for athletes, hybrid training and runners. Use it as a foundational sport-prep element, a finisher on leg days or a way to load the sprint pattern without leaving the gym.
