Cable Decline Bench Press
Cable press on a decline bench that targets the lower chest with smooth, constant tension.
How to do it
- Place a decline bench between two cable stations with both pulleys low and single handles attached.
- Lock your feet under the pads and lie back, then press both handles up over your lower chest.
- Lower the handles to chest level, elbows traveling at about 60–75 degrees from your torso.
- Pause briefly at the bottom with a deep chest stretch, keeping your upper back pressed firmly into the bench.
- Press the handles back up in a slight arc until they meet over your lower chest at full extension.
- Squeeze your chest hard at the top and repeat for 8–12 reps at a controlled tempo.
Key technique cue
Upper back pinned to the bench, elbows ~60° — lower slowly and take the full stretch.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Flaring the elbows wide, which loads the front delts and pulls the focus off the lower chest.
- ✕ Rushing the descent and skipping the deep chest stretch that drives hypertrophy.
- ✕ Pressing the handles unevenly, which builds side-to-side imbalances over time.
- ✕ Lifting the hips off the bench for leverage, which destabilizes the press and risks back injury.
Benefits
- ✓ Targets the lower chest with constant cable tension.
- ✓ Builds a thicker lower-chest line for balanced chest development.
- ✓ Removes the lockout dead spot that comes with the barbell decline press.

About the exercise
The cable decline bench press is a horizontal pressing exercise done on a decline bench between two low pulleys. The decline shifts the load onto the lower chest, and the cables keep tension constant from stretch to lockout. It's a strong option for lifters chasing balanced chest development and a thicker lower-chest line. It fits cleanly into chest hypertrophy blocks and aesthetics-focused push days. It's also useful in cable-heavy gyms where a barbell decline press isn't available. Pair it with the cable incline bench press for a complete chest hypertrophy session.
