Machine Leg Press

A seated leg press that loads the quads and glutes through a guided movement — a heavy alternative to the back squat.

How to do it

  1. Sit in the machine with your back fully against the pad and your feet shoulder-width apart on the platform.
  2. Release the safety handles and grip the side handles to lock in your torso and hips.
  3. Lower the platform slowly toward your chest over 2–3 seconds until your knees reach about 90 degrees.
  4. Keep your lower back pressed firmly into the pad and your knees tracking in line with your toes.
  5. Press the platform up, driving through your heels and mid-foot.
  6. Stop just short of full knee lockout at the top, then lower the weight under control without unloading the stack.

Key technique cue

Keep your lower back on the pad, knees out of the cave-in, and don't lock out at the top.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding the lower back and lifting it off the pad at the bottom, which puts the spine at risk.
  • Locking the knees out hard at the top of every rep, which jars the joint under heavy load.
  • Letting the knees cave in while pressing, which stresses the knees and reduces force output.
  • Cutting the range short and pressing only the top few centimeters, which trains a small part of the leg.

Benefits

  • Builds quad and glute strength with heavy, scalable loading.
  • Removes spinal compression while still training the legs hard.
  • Gives a safe leg-day option for lifters coming back from back issues.

About the exercise

The Machine Leg Press lets lifters move serious load through the quads and glutes without a barbell on the spine. Seated or reclined in the machine, the lifter pushes the sled away from the body by extending the hips and knees, then brings it back under control. The fixed path removes the balance demand and lets the legs work to true fatigue. It is a leg-day cornerstone and a smart alternative to squats for anyone who cannot or does not want to back squat. It fits hypertrophy work, beginners, returning to training and gym workouts.
