Mountain Climber

A fast-paced knee drive from a plank position that trains the core and spikes the heart rate — the go-to HIIT finisher.

How to do it

  1. Get into a high plank with your hands directly under your shoulders and your arms straight.
  2. Brace your core hard and squeeze your glutes to keep your hips level with your shoulders.
  3. Drive your right knee toward your chest, keeping your foot off the floor at the front of the movement.
  4. Snap your right leg back while driving your left knee forward in a smooth, alternating rhythm.
  5. Keep your hips low and your shoulders over your wrists for the whole set.
  6. Continue for 20–40 seconds at a controlled pace, prioritizing technique over raw speed.

Key technique cue

Hands under shoulders, hips level with them — drive knees to the chest.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing the hips up and down, which takes the load off the core and breaks the plank position.
  • Arching the lower back as the legs move, which loads the spine instead of the core.
  • Placing the hands too far forward of the shoulders, which collapses the plank and stresses the wrists.
  • Going so fast that the range disappears and the knees barely move instead of driving toward the chest.

Benefits

  • Trains the core under load while spiking the heart rate.
  • Builds general fitness with no equipment or space needed.
  • Reinforces a strong plank position under fatigue and movement.

About the exercise

The Mountain Climber is one of the most widely used conditioning exercises in modern training. Holding a high plank, the lifter alternates driving the knees toward the chest as fast as technique allows. The combination of plank-level core loading and fast-paced leg movement makes it a powerful core-and-cardio hybrid that needs no equipment at all. It is a staple for HIIT circuits, bodyweight finishers, warm-ups and home and travel workouts where space and equipment are limited. It pairs naturally with burpees and jumping jacks.
