Walking Knee Hugs
A walking warm-up that hugs one knee to the chest on each step, opening the hips while challenging single-leg balance.
How to do it
- Stand tall with the arms hanging at the sides and the eyes forward.
- Step forward onto one foot and lift the opposite knee toward the chest.
- Wrap both hands around the shin or just below the knee and pull it in gently.
- Keep the stance leg long and the torso upright; do not collapse into a slouch.
- Hold the hug for a brief pause, then release and step forward.
- Repeat on the other side and keep walking as you alternate.
Key technique cue
Standing leg straight, torso tall; knee to chest, not chest to knee.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Leaning the chest forward onto the thigh instead of standing tall.
- ✕ Softening the stance knee so the hug becomes a balance wobble.
- ✕ Yanking the knee so hard that the lumbar spine rounds.
- ✕ Rushing the walk so there is no pause at the top of the hug.
Benefits
- ✓ Opens the hips and stretches the glutes and hamstrings while you move.
- ✓ Challenges single-leg balance and a tall trunk without any kit.
- ✓ Fits running and field warm-ups that need to travel forward.
About the exercise
Walking knee hugs are a dynamic mobility drill. You walk forward, lift one knee toward the chest, and pull it in with both hands while standing tall on the other leg, then step and switch. The hug stretches the glutes and hamstrings of the raised leg; the stance leg has to stay long and quiet. It is a warm-up, not a loaded strength lift.
