Archer Push-Up
A wide-hand push-up that shifts most of the load onto one bending arm while the far arm stays long and nearly straight.
How to do it
- Set up in a push-up position with the hands well outside shoulder width and the body in a straight line.
- Brace the core and squeeze the glutes so the hips stay level.
- Bend one elbow and shift your weight toward that hand, keeping the far arm long and nearly straight.
- Lower until the chest on the working side is close to the floor.
- Press back through the working hand until both arms are straight and the hips are still level.
- Repeat toward the other side, alternating for the set.
Key technique cue
Keep the far arm long and nearly straight — don't bend it, don't twist the hips.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Letting the hips rotate or sag instead of holding a stiff plank.
- ✕ Bending the far arm, which quietly turns the rep back into a wide push-up.
- ✕ Cutting the range so the chest never travels far enough toward the working hand.
- ✕ Attempting the drill before regular push-ups are clean and strong.
Benefits
- ✓ Shifts most of the bodyweight onto one arm, so pressing strength builds with no extra load.
- ✓ Works as the stepping stone between two-arm push-ups and one-arm push-ups.
- ✓ Trains anti-rotation bracing alongside the chest and triceps.

About the exercise
The archer push-up is a wide-hand push-up that loads one side at a time. Hands start wide, and as the body lowers, one arm bends and takes most of the weight while the other stays extended out to the side, so the working chest, front delt, and triceps press close to what a single arm would handle. The long arm still helps a little, which is why the drill sits between a two-arm push-up and a one-arm push-up. Keeping a straight line from head to heels is harder here than in a regular push-up, because the uneven load tries to twist the hips. That anti-rotation demand is part of the exercise.
