Band Lateral Raise

Standing band lateral raise — builds wider, rounder-looking shoulders without dumbbells.

How to do it

  1. Stand on the middle of the band with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a handle in each hand at your sides.
  2. Keep a slight bend in your elbows and your palms facing your thighs at the start of the movement.
  3. Raise both arms straight out to the sides until your hands reach shoulder height, leading with your elbows.
  4. Pause briefly at the top, feeling your lateral delts squeeze under the band's peak tension.
  5. Lower your arms back down with control over a 2–3 second eccentric, resisting the band the whole way.
  6. Do 12–15 reps, prioritizing strict form over band tension.

Key technique cue

Lead with the elbows, hands no higher than the shoulders; lower slowly.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the torso to heave the arms up — momentum robs the lateral delts of the work.
  • Locking the elbows out fully, which shifts the load onto the wrists and forearms.
  • Raising the arms above shoulder height, where the traps take over from the lateral delts.
  • Using a band that's too heavy for the raise, breaking form and losing the strict isolation pattern.

Benefits

  • Builds wider, rounder side delts without dumbbells.
  • Trains the lateral delts at peak resistance thanks to the band's strength curve.
  • Travel- and home-friendly — works anywhere with a single band.

About the exercise

The band lateral raise targets the lateral delts — the muscle that gives the shoulders their round, capped look. Because bands get stiffer the more they stretch, the top of the rep is the hardest part, which trains the lateral delts in their toughest position and often pumps them better than light dumbbells can. It's a staple of home, travel and band-only programs. It's also a great choice for beginners learning to train their shoulders, because the band makes the resistance curve easy to feel — you learn what lateral-delt engagement actually feels like before moving on to dumbbells.
