Cable Overhead Press
Standing cable overhead press that builds the front and side delts with smooth, constant tension from top to bottom.
How to do it
- Set both pulleys to the low position and take a single handle in each hand with an overhand grip.
- Step into the cables in a split stance, brace your core and bring the handles up to shoulder level.
- Start with your elbows about 30 degrees in front of your torso and your forearms vertical.
- Press both handles straight up overhead to full arm extension so they meet above your head.
- Squeeze your shoulders at the top, then slowly lower the handles back to shoulder level over 2 seconds.
- Repeat for 8–12 controlled reps without leaning back or pushing your hips forward.
Key technique cue
Torso upright, hips don't drift forward; press the handles straight up.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Leaning way back to press the handles up, which turns it into a standing incline press and risks back injury.
- ✕ Flaring the elbows straight out to the sides, which overloads the front delts.
- ✕ Stopping short of full lockout and missing the strongest contraction at the top.
- ✕ Rushing the lowering and losing tension before the next rep.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds the front and side delts under constant cable tension.
- ✓ Strengthens the core to stabilize against vertical overhead load.
- ✓ Trains a standing press pattern that carries over to sport and everyday life.

About the exercise
The cable overhead press is a standing vertical pressing exercise done from two low pulleys. Pressing the handles from shoulder level to full lockout overhead, it trains the front and side delts along with the triceps under constant cable tension. The standing position also forces the core and glutes to brace hard against the load, which makes it as much a full-body exercise as a shoulder one. It fits well into push days, dedicated shoulder days and strength blocks. It's also a great fit for athletic training, where the standing overhead press pattern carries over to throwing, blocking and overhead movements in sport. Pair it with face pulls for a complete shoulder day.
