Kettlebell Seated Overhead Press

A strict seated two-kettlebell press that isolates the shoulders and triceps without help from the legs.

How to do it

  1. Sit on a bench with a back rest, holding a kettlebell in each hand in the rack position at your shoulders.
  2. Plant your feet flat on the floor and brace your core, locking your torso in place.
  3. Press both kettlebells straight up overhead until your arms are fully extended.
  4. Finish with your wrists stacked over your elbows and the bells resting on the backs of your forearms.
  5. Lower the kettlebells slowly back to the rack, elbows traveling forward rather than out to the sides.
  6. Pause briefly at the bottom, reset your tension, and press again for the next rep.

Key technique cue

Wrists stacked over the elbows; no back arch, no bouncing the bells off the shoulders.

Common mistakes

  • Arching the lower back for pressing leverage instead of staying braced and upright.
  • Bending the wrists back at lockout, which loads the joint.
  • Pressing the bells out in front of the head instead of straight up over the shoulders.
  • Bouncing the bells off the shoulders at the bottom instead of pausing under control.

Benefits

  • Builds strict shoulder and triceps strength without help from the legs.
  • Builds shoulder size through a long, loaded overhead range.
  • Reinforces a vertical pressing path that protects the lower back.

About the exercise

The Kettlebell Seated Overhead Press is a strict overhead press performed seated on a bench with a kettlebell in each hand. The seated position takes the legs and lower back out of the movement, forcing the shoulders and triceps to do the work. The bells rest in the rack position against the forearms, which keeps the wrists neutral and the elbows tightly tucked. It's a clean pick for any shoulder-focused training block where the goal is a strict press. It suits hypertrophy work, beginners building shoulder strength, and rehab, where the seated position helps lifters who can't yet stabilize a standing press.
