Dumbbell Lateral Raise
A standing dumbbell raise out to the sides — the go-to isolation for the side delts and shoulder width.
How to do it
- Stand tall holding a dumbbell in each hand, arms at your sides, palms facing your thighs.
- Set a slight bend in your elbows and lock that bend in place for the rest of the set.
- Brace your core, pull your shoulders back and down, and resist any urge to swing your torso.
- Raise both dumbbells out to the sides in a wide arc until your arms reach shoulder height.
- Pause briefly at the top with your wrists, elbows, and shoulders in roughly one straight line.
- Lower the dumbbells under control over 2-3 seconds back to the start, fighting the tension all the way down.
Key technique cue
Lead with the elbows, not the hands; stop at shoulder height, no swinging.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Swinging the torso to heave the dumbbells up, letting the traps and momentum take over.
- ✕ Raising the dumbbells above shoulder height, which shifts the work from the side delts to the traps.
- ✕ Straightening and bending the elbows mid-rep, bringing the biceps and front delts into the work.
- ✕ Going too heavy, which breaks down technique and removes the isolation that is the whole point of the exercise.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds side-delt size for shoulder width and a V-taper.
- ✓ Develops the rounded, capped shoulder look that defines aesthetic physiques.
- ✓ Improves shoulder stability and control through a strict isolation pattern.

About the exercise
The Dumbbell Lateral Raise is the textbook isolation for the side delt — the muscle on the outside of the shoulder that creates a wide, capped look. Raising the dumbbells out to the sides until the arms reach shoulder height places the load directly on the side delt with minimal help from other muscles. It is an essential shoulder exercise. It fits every push day, every shoulder day, every hypertrophy program, and any aesthetics-focused training that wants to build a visible V-taper.
