Machine Pulldown
A seated lat pulldown that trains the lats and biceps through a fixed vertical pull — the universal gym back builder.
How to do it
- Sit in the machine and lock your thighs under the pad, with your feet flat on the floor.
- Grab the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width with palms facing forward.
- Lean your torso back about 10–15 degrees and pull your shoulder blades down to engage your lats.
- Pull the bar down to your upper chest, driving your elbows down and back rather than yanking with your arms.
- Pause briefly at the bottom with the bar near your collarbones, squeezing your lats hard.
- Let the bar rise slowly over 2–3 seconds until your arms are fully straight overhead.
Key technique cue
Blades down, drive the elbows to the collarbones, don't yank with the arms.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Pulling with the biceps and forearms instead of leading with the elbows and back.
- ✕ Leaning back too far, which turns the exercise into a row instead of a vertical pull.
- ✕ Cutting the top range short and never fully straightening the arms, which removes the lat stretch.
- ✕ Letting the stack crash at the top, killing the slow return where most muscle growth happens.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds lat width and back thickness with a beginner-friendly pattern.
- ✓ Strengthens the vertical pull, which carries over directly to pull-ups.
- ✓ Trains the lats and biceps through a clean, full range of motion.

About the exercise
The Machine Pulldown is the universal vertical pull. Seated under a fixed bar with the thighs under a pad, the lifter pulls the bar down toward the upper chest, loading the lats through their full pulling range. The fixed bar path makes the exercise easy to learn and easy to feel — the lats either work or they do not. It is a staple for pull day, beginner back programs and pull-up progressions. Lifters who cannot yet do a strict pull-up build the same pattern here, which makes it indispensable at every level from beginner to advanced.
