Kettlebell Shrug
Standing shrugs with two kettlebells that isolate the upper traps through a clean vertical lift.
How to do it
- Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and a kettlebell hanging at each side.
- Pull your shoulder blades back and down to set a tall, neutral starting position.
- Raise both shoulders straight up toward your ears without bending your elbows.
- Pause briefly at the top with your traps fully contracted, keeping your chin neutral.
- Lower the kettlebells slowly to the start, letting your shoulders drop under control.
- Repeat for the whole set, keeping the lift strictly vertical with no shoulder rolling.
Key technique cue
Keep the chin back and arms straight — shoulders move straight up and down.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Rolling the shoulders forward and back instead of lifting straight up, which stresses the joint.
- ✕ Bending the elbows to pull with the biceps instead of isolating the traps.
- ✕ Jutting the chin forward at the top of the shrug, which strains the neck.
- ✕ Cutting the range to a barely visible shoulder lift, leaving most of the trap work undone.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds upper-trap size and visible thickness through the neck and shoulders.
- ✓ Strengthens the traps' role in stabilizing heavy carries and pulls.
- ✓ Improves posture and neck support for desk-bound lifters.

About the exercise
The Kettlebell Shrug is a single-joint accessory exercise that targets the upper traps. With a kettlebell hanging at each side, the lifter raises the shoulders straight up toward the ears, holds a short pause at the top, and lowers under control. The neutral grip and offset weight of the bells make it easier to keep the arms relaxed and let the traps do the work. It's a clean accessory exercise for back, shoulder, or neck development. It fits upper-body hypertrophy, accessory work after pull day, and training where building visible trap mass is part of the goal. It's also useful for posture and neck strength if you sit a lot.
