Cable 30 Degree Shrug
Cable shrug at a 30-degree angle that loads the upper traps along their natural fiber line — a smarter take on the shrug.
How to do it
- Set the pulley to the low position and attach a straight bar or rope handle.
- Stand a step or two away from the stack and take the handle with straight arms.
- Lean your torso forward about 30 degrees, keeping your back flat and your core braced.
- Let your shoulders relax forward and down so the cable pulls the traps into a stretch.
- Shrug your shoulders up and slightly back along the line of the cable, squeezing the traps hard.
- Lower the weight back under control over 2–3 seconds and repeat for high reps.
Key technique cue
Hold the 30-degree lean and shrug up and slightly back along the cable, arms straight.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Standing fully upright, which turns it into a regular straight-up shrug.
- ✕ Bending the elbows instead of keeping the arms straight — loads the biceps, not the traps.
- ✕ Rounding the lower back in the leaned-over position, which stresses the spine over high volume.
- ✕ Going too heavy and rolling the shoulders forward instead of lifting them up and back.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds upper-trap size along their natural fiber direction.
- ✓ Develops back thickness and a stronger upper-back silhouette.
- ✓ The cable keeps the traps under constant tension through the whole range.

About the exercise
The cable 30-degree shrug is a shrug variation that loads the upper traps along the natural angle of their fibers. Leaning slightly toward a low pulley and lifting the shoulders up and back shifts the line of pull from purely vertical to a diagonal close to the direction the upper traps run, and the cable keeps the muscle under tension through the whole range. It suits hypertrophy programs and pull-day accessory blocks. It pairs well with rows and face pulls at the end of pull day.
