Band Shrug
Standing band shrug isolating the upper traps — a low-impact way to build neck and upper-back strength.
How to do it
- Stand on the middle of the band with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a handle in each hand at your sides.
- Stand tall with your arms straight, shoulders relaxed and down, and chin slightly tucked for a neutral neck.
- Lift both shoulders straight up toward your ears, keeping your arms straight and elbows soft.
- Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your upper traps under the band's peak tension.
- Lower your shoulders back down with control over a 2–3 second eccentric, resisting the band.
- Do 12–20 reps, focusing on the trap squeeze at the top rather than speed.
Key technique cue
Lift the shoulders straight up to the ears, arms straight — no circles.
Common mistakes
- ✕ Rolling the shoulders forward and back instead of lifting straight up — it adds nothing and puts the joint at risk.
- ✕ Bending the elbows during the shrug, turning it into a partial row.
- ✕ Standing on too narrow a section of the band, making the tension uneven between arms.
- ✕ Rushing the eccentric and letting the band yank your shoulders down, losing the hardest part of the rep.
Benefits
- ✓ Builds upper-trap strength for posture and neck stability.
- ✓ Improves your deadlift lockout by training a stronger trap contraction.
- ✓ Low-impact and travel-friendly — works anywhere with a single band.

About the exercise
The band shrug isolates the upper traps in a clean, simple movement: stand on the band, hold the handles and lift your shoulders straight up. Because bands get stiffer as they stretch, the top of the rep is the hardest — and that's exactly where the traps need to learn to contract hard. It suits anyone building neck and upper-back strength, lifters working on their deadlift lockout and anyone working on posture. It's also a good way for beginners to learn what a shrug actually feels like, since the band's tension makes the trap squeeze obvious.
