Machine Pec Fly

A seated fly machine that isolates the pecs through an arc of motion — the cleanest chest-only stimulus in the gym.

How to do it

  1. Adjust the seat so the handles are at chest height and your elbows are roughly in line with your shoulders.
  2. Grab both handles with your elbows slightly bent and press your back firmly into the pad.
  3. Brace your core and pull your shoulder blades back and down to set a stable chest position.
  4. Bring the handles together in a wide arc, squeezing your chest and keeping a fixed elbow angle.
  5. Pause in the middle as the handles meet, holding a hard chest squeeze for a full count.
  6. Let the handles open slowly over 2–3 seconds until you feel a controlled stretch in your chest.

Key technique cue

Shoulder blades back and down, elbow angle fixed; don't roll the shoulders forward.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the elbows mid-rep, which turns the movement into a press and loses chest isolation.
  • Letting the shoulders roll forward in the stretched position, which loads the front delts.
  • Swinging the handles together with momentum instead of squeezing them through the contraction.
  • Cutting the stretch short and never opening the arms fully, which trains a tiny part of the movement.

Benefits

  • Isolates the chest more directly than any pressing movement.
  • Builds chest size with low joint stress and a strong mind-muscle connection.
  • Easy to load progressively without overloading the shoulders or wrists.

About the exercise

The Machine Pec Fly isolates the chest while taking the triceps and shoulders almost entirely out of the equation. Sitting upright with the arms locked into a pair of pads or handles, the lifter brings the arms together in a wide arc, loading the chest through its full adduction range. The fixed path makes the chest contraction unmistakable. It is a valuable accessory for chest day, hypertrophy work and finisher work after pressing. It also helps beginners who struggle to feel their chest working in the bench press.
